Drinking on a Monday is a short column where I share that one bottle that I open after the most dreadful of all weekdays.
Freshness is the key word of today’s Drinking On A Monday and you can’t get much more fresh than this bottle of El Segundo Brewing Company‘s HOP TANKER. Re-released this past friday after an initial launch during LA Beer Week, this is the beer that’s putting El Segundo on the hophead map. I grabbed a couple of bottles on Saturday afternoon and I’m already thinking of going back for more.
The bomber pours a slightly hazy honey-orange color and immediately you are hit with an aroma that is like a citrus-soaked pinecone that punches you in the face. I could inhale this smell all day. The first sip starts with full-out tropical sweetness thats quickly cut by a strong hop bitterness that lingers perfectly on the tongue. Its a big beer and not for the faint of heart, but anyone who loves a big DIPA is going to love this beer.
Without a doubt, this Double IPA is one of the best that LA has to offer. Its so big and bold but hits all those marks you want out of a beer like this. At over 9% ABV, its something that’s worth sharing, but after a couple of sips you may just want to keep it all to yourself. Get this one fresh, because the explosion of resiny hops you get from it is not to be missed.
